New York, NY - The men's basketball team capped the regular season on Tuesday evening with a thrilling 98-96 victory over CCNY. The win puts them back at .500 with a 12-12 overall record and a 7-7 mark in league action. It also secures their seed as the #5 in the CUNYAC Tournament.
Cormac Reilly had a game high 26 points and did nearly all of his damage from behind the arc, knocking down eight of his 12 attempts. Meanwhile,
Gene Propper was good for 15 points on 6-13 shooting which includes three triples and the game winner. Both
Luka Jakic and
Casey Meyers added 11 points apiece in the win. Defensively, the Hawks had 16 steals, forced 20 turnovers and out-rebounded their opponents, 53-51. Offensively, they shot 44.2 percent from the floor and were an impressive 17-42 from downtown.
With the exception of the first basket of the game, the Purple and Gold led for virtually the entire game. They led by as much as 13 in the first half thanks to hot shooting from all over the front court which included 33 of their 60 first half points coming from deep. Despite holding a 49-38 lead with less than six minutes left to play in the opening half, the Beavers chopped away to pull within two. At halftime, Hunter led 60-57.
At the 18:09 mark in the second, Hunter gave up the lead and trailed for the first time since the opening moments of the game. A layup and three pointer from Cormac, followed up by a
Casey Meyers two put the Haws back up by six. However, it was the highest lead they enjoyed for the rest of the half. The hosts stuck around and used a late 5-0 run to go up by two with 2:30 remaining. Another triple from Cormac made it a one point affair with under a minute showing on the clock. With CCNY struggling to knock down a shot down the stretch, it was Propper who sunk a triple on a feed from
Jared Brown that put the nail in the coffin. The host's Luqman Ahmed missed on his team's last second effort on the ensuing and final possession of the game.
