Men's Hoops Beats #4 John Jay in CUNYAC First Round

The Hawks will advance to the semi-finals

New York, NY - The #5 men's basketball team upset the #4 Bloodhounds of John Jay in the quarterfinal round of the CUNYAC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament. The Hawks tick above .500 at 13-12 and will face top seeded Lehman College in the semi-finals.

The Hawks had five score in the double figures and were led by Jared Brown's 22 point performance. Jeremy Montrose and Casey Meyers added 14 and 13 points respectively while Hiroki Hamazaki chipped in with 11. First Team All-Star, Luka Jakic registered his 11th double double with 11 points and as many rebounds.

As a team, the Purple and Gold sank just eight three pointers and shot 33-94 from the field while making 27-36 attempts from the charity stripe. Defensively, they caused 29 turnovers, tallied 18 steals and recorded four blocks.

Hunter led almost the entire first half, quickly opening the game with a 9-0 run. They held a steady lead up until the 5:16 mark when John Jay's Angel Rivera made good on a layup to give the Bloodhounds a 33-32 lead. It was short lived though after Raheem Bakary made both of his free throw attempts just six seconds later to regain the lead. The Purple and Gold headed into halftime with a 45-41 advantage.

The roles were reversed in the second act with the hosts leading for a portion of the time. From the 16:05 mark until 9:23, the Hawks slipped into a hole that grew as much as eight points. With a jumper from Brown, and an and-one added from Cormac Reilly, the Hawks used a 9-0 run to turn a five point deficit ito a four point upper hand.

With just under four minutes left to play, two good free throws from Hamazaki made it a seven point affair, but the Bloodhounds did not go away easily. They cut into the lead and pulled within three with 24 seconds showing on the scoreboard. However, Hunter connected on five of their final eight attempts from the charity stripe to put the nail in the coffin.

Hunter advances to play #1 Lehman on Wednesday, February 23 at 6pm.
