New York, NY - Hunter softball extended their win streak to 10 after defeating the Lightning of Lehman College in both games of the twinbill earlier today. The Hawks blanked their challengers 8-0 in game one and then ended the day with a 5-3 victory in the second game. The Purple and Gold advance their record to 17-9 overall and sit atop the CUNYAC standings at an unblemished 14-0.
Game 1 (Hunter-8 | Lehman -0)
15 hits highlighted game one as the Hawk bats were once again red hot. As she has been doing all year, leadoff hitter
Sophia Perez had another impressive game with a 3-3 plate performance that included one run scored, an RBI, double, walk and stolen base. Five other players for Hunter had two hits apiece with
Kayla Pilotti tallying three RBI.
T'ea Panagakos got the job done and won her seventh game of the season after hurling four shutout innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two.
Sarah Schor closed the final inning and struck out one in the process.
Lehman's Liz Perez led off with a game opening single, which proved to be the lone hit of the day. The Lightning capitalized on a Hunter fielding miscue and threatened early but threw Perez out at home to keep Lehman at bay. Hunter responded in the bottom of the first with a run manufactured by a leadoff single from Perez, who stole second and then scored on an RBI single from
Olivia Palumbo to go up 1-0. After a 1-2-3 second inning, the Hawks had an opportunity to add another run in the bottom of the second, but
Leah Dillon was thrown out at home by Lehman's right fielder.
In the bottom of the third, Hunter added two runs before
Kayla Pilotti ripped a bases clearing three-RBI triple to put her team on top, 6-0.
Alyssa Curiale had an RBI double to score Palumbo in the bottom of the fourth inning to add an insurance run before Perez took an RBI walk with bases loaded to score the eighth and final run of the game.
Game 2 (Hunter-5 | Lehman -3)
Schor started the game and tossed one shutout inning before Dillon came in for three innings of relief where she allowed just two hits. Curiale closed the final three innings and allowed three runs on three hits while striking out four batters.
The Hawks threatened first with a one-out, bases loaded opportunity in the bottom of the third, However,
Nicole Bowe and
Olivia Woodruff were unable to bring the runners home as they recorded the last two outs to end the inning. They finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth after
Samantha Marsala walked and then was driven home courtesy of a Pilotti RBI triple. They were able to manufacture four more runs thanks to a wild pitch, stolen base and solid contact that included three hits. Heading into the fifth inning, the Purple and Gold enjoyed a 5-0 lead.
Back-to-back singles, followed up by a fielding error resulted in the Lightning scoring their first run in the top of the sixth inning. They were able to add two more before the conclusion of the frame but they trailed 5-3. The Hawks were able to hold off their counterparts and retired the final three batters of the day in order and closed the books on their 10th straight win.
Up next, the squad will face Rutgers-Newark in a double header on Thursday, April 28 with the first game beginning at 3pm.
