New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's basketball team dropped a conference game at home to John Jay College, 118-110 at home on Wednesday evening, The loss pushes the Hawks to 4-10 overall and 1-3 in the CUNYAC, while John Jay improves to 3-12 and 2-2 in conference.
The Bloodhounds got off to an early lead, Hunter was able to tie the game up at 12-12 with a good layup from
Luka Jakic but John Jay continued to push the pace until the ninth minute of play when
Alioune Mbengue tied the score once again at 33. Despite the Hawks netting seven three pointers in the first half alone, they could not overcome the Bloodhounds and headed into the intermission trailing 62-50.
John Jay continued to widen the gap, leading by as much as 13 earliy on in the second half. Hunter fought back, going on a 21-6 run taking the lead in the 11th minute as
Enzo Caceres-Roussel hit a pull up jumper, putting the Hawks up 78-76. Despite outscoring the Bloodhounds, 60-56 in the second period, Hunter was unable to overcome and eventually fell, 118-110.
Despite the loss,
Devon Matthews led all scorers for the night with 29 points, a career high for him.
Ryan Lau added 14 points of his own as he went 4-5 from the three-point line for the night. Caceres-Roussel netted another 14 and grabbed a season-high five steals in the game.
Jeremy Montrose and Devon Cola also scored in double-digits for the Hawks, with 11 and 10, respectively.
Hunter returns to the court for another CUNYAC game at Brooklyn College on Friday Jan. 13. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
