New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College women's volleyball team split its home trimatch on Saturday afternoon, starting off with a 3-2 win over USMMA, followed by an 0-3 falter against Ramapo. The. Hawks are not 17-7 overall for the 2023 campaign.
Hunter started the day off against United States Merchant Marine Academy, where the team pulled off a gutsy 3-2 win. This intense game featured 13 tie scores and four lead changes. The opening set saw Merchant Marine take the lead, but Hunter fought back, and a series of lead changes kept the crowd engaged. The match was tied up after four sets, with the Mariners securing the second (25-17) while the Hawks came back to take a 2-1 lead after a dominant third set (25-11), before USMMA won the fourth at 25-16.
The final set of the match saw a back-and-forth battle with multiple lead changes, however Hunter managed to edge out Merchant Marine 15-7, winning the match in a thrilling fashion. Erin Dugan was a key player for Hunter, contributing with excellent setting and 17 digs. Tionna Moss's 11 kills and Lily Mattison's eight played a pivotal role in Hunter's victory. Bethany Tomaneng led all players with six aces.
After an exciting win, the Hawks faulted in their second match of the day, falling in three sets to Ramapo. After a 35-14 loss in the first set, Hunter fought back but was overwhelmed by Roadrunners, falling 25-21. The Purple and Gold's attempt to turn the tide in the third fell short as Ramapo took the final set 25-19 to win the match 3-0. Dugan was again a standout for the Hawks' leading the team with 12 digs while Moss put up an impressive five blocks. Tomaneng tacked on 20 assists and nine digs as well.
The Hawks continue their season on the road on Oct. 24 as they look to remain undefeated in conference play against York. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
