Township, N.J.- The Hunter College men's basketball team fell to Wells in their first game of the TCNJ Tournament on Saturday afternoon, 68-64. Each team's record moved to 1-3 following the game at Packer Hall.
The first half saw Hunter take a slim lead, going into halftime with a score of 31-28. Wells struggled from beyond the arc in the first half, shooting 3-13 (23.08%) on three-point attempts, while the Hawks capitalized on free throws, shooting 66.67% from the line in the first half. Following the intermission, Wells came back in the second half, improving to 56.67% from the field. The game featured eight tied scores and 13 lead changes in the back-and-forth battle.
Luka Jakic led Hunter with 16 points, while grabbing seven rebounds. Jack Meyers followed with 11 including a pair of threes and led the team with nine rebounds for the day. Kareem McDonald was also a significant contributor, tallying eight points and six assists.
The Hawks shot 28.4% overall for the day, and 21.2% from three-point range. On the defensive side, Hunter grabbed 37 defensive rebounds compared to Wells' 24, and forced seven turn overs which the team converted to 12 points. The Purple and Gold also netted 21 second-change points while holding its opponent to a mere seven. The Hawks' bench proved efficient with 19 points, just over Wells' 17.
Hunter continues the TCNJ Tournament on Saturday as they face off against the host at 3:00 p.m.
