Hawks Top Albertus Magnus in 83-77 Thriller

New York, N.Y. - In a competitive matchup between Hunter College and Albertus Magnus in the Sportsplex, the Hawks emerged victorious with a final score of 83-77, snapping the visitors' win streak and handing them their second loss of the season.

The game was marked by intense back-and-forth action, with six lead changes over the course of the night.

In the first half, Hunter (3-7) took an early lead as Corey Jones Jr. scored from beyond the arc, assisted by Luka Jakic, to get the first points on the board. However, Albertus Magnus quickly responded, leveling the score at 3-3. The Purple and Gold maintained a lead, with Casey Meyers contributing a three and Jack Meyers scoring a layup on a fast break, extending their lead to 8-3. Kareem McDonald's successful jumper and subsequent free throw brought Hunter's lead to 11-3. Hunter continued to dominate, with Jack Meyers netting another three, giving the Hawks a 14-6 edge. The Falcons briefly evened the score in the ninth and eighth minutes, but Hunter was relentless in separating itself from the visitors. A pair of good free throws from William Brown with two minutes left gave Hunter its biggest lead yet at 49-32. Despite a 5-0 run to close out the half, Hunter maintained control, leading 49-38 heading into the break.

Jack Meyers opened up scoring for the second half with another three for Hunter, sparking a 10-0 run. The Hawks continued to dominate throughout the first half of the second period, leading by as much as 22 on two separate occasions. Albertus Magnus pushed through to cut down the lead, and with under three minutes left in play, the Falcons came within single digits of the Hawks for the first time in the second half. The visitors went on to score seven straight points, but an and-1 by McDonald followed by a steal from the sophomore gave Hunter a five-point edge in the final moments of play. A pair of good free throws from Jones Jr., who shot 8-10 from the line for the night, locked in the win for the Hawks.

McDonald led all scorers with 26 points as he grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. Jones Jr. followed with 16 points, while Jack Meyers also scored in double-digits with 13 for the night. Senior Jakic was also a force for the Hawks, grabbing 12 rebounds in addition to nine points.

Points off turnovers played a crucial role, with Hunter capitalizing on turnovers and securing 25 points. Both teams displayed defensive prowess, combining for 10 blocks and 15 steals. The Hawks shot 40.4% from the field and 40.9% from three-point range, topping the Falcons in each category as they held the visitors to 37.2% from the field and 27.8% from beyond the arc.
