Jamaica, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's basketball team traveled to York College on Friday evening where they defeated the Cardinals, 94-88 in a conference competition. The win pushes the Hawks to 9-4 overall (7-8 CUNYAC) while York falls to 8-16 and 7-6 in conference.
The game started evenly matched but by the ninth minute of play, the Hawks secured a 10 point lead as
Gene Propper sank a three from
Alioune Mbengue. From there the Cardinals slowly climbed back to leave the Hawks trailing by one (37-36) heading into the intermission. Hunter overcame an 11 point deficit in the second period and were able to tie up the game with 12 minutes to go as
Ryan Lau sank one from three. York kept it close until a pair of turnovers capitalized by a three from
Cormac Reilly and a dunk from
Luka Jakic put Hunter up 82-73 with less than five minutes left on the clock. Hunter was able to hold that lead for the remainder of play and walk away with a win for their final road contest of the regular season.
Lau led the team with 18 points on the night, shooting 3-7 from deep, while securing three rebounds and four steals. Jakic added an impressive 16 points and 15 rebounds to go along with five assists, two blocks and two steals.
Casey Meyers went 3-8 from three, contributing to his 14 total points while
Jeremy Montrose added 12 points of his own.
Overall, 37.6% from the field and 31% from three compared to the Cardinals' 45.3% overall an 21.4% from beyond the arc.
The Hawks return to the court on Tuesday Feb. 14th for their final game of the regular season as they host CCNY at 7:00 p.m. in the Sportsplex.
