New York. N.Y.- The Hunter College men's volleyball team swept Medgar-Evers, 3-0, in a home conference matchup on Thursday evening. The win pushes the Hawks to 6-5 overall and 4-0 in CUNYAC play, to remain undefeated, while the Cougars fall to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in conference.
For the Purple and Gold,
Andrew Estiverne's 15 kills led all players, as the standout hit .700 for the match (15-1-20). He also contributed three digs, three block assists, and a pair of helpers.
Ted Kim and
Matisse Lee-Maarek registered six kills apiece, and
Gabe Mendoza finalized his evening with a perfect hitting percentage (5-0-5) while tying for the match high of seven digs. Finally, Morgan Cooper's 28 assists and seven service aces were both match highs, and he also compiled seven assists.
The Hawks jumped out to a 12-7 early lead before the Cougars' three consecutive points to pull to within two at 12-10. Holding its two point, 13-11 edge, the Hawks essentially ended any chance of a Medgar-Evers first set victory, as Hunter registered six straight points to take a commanding 19-11 lead. Kim had a pair of kills during the run, and
Onyeka Onaga and Estiverne contributed a kill apiece as well. After that run, Hunter closed the set by outscoring the visitors 6-3 to cap the first set triumph.
Hunter used the momentum from the strong finish in the previous set to race out to an 8-0 edge in the second. Niro Osbourne notched a pair of service aces during that spurt, while Estiverne and Mendoza registered two kills apiece. The other two points came courtesy of Cougars attack errors. Later, after going up 12-2, Hunter led by double digits the rest of the set, eventually taking a 15 point edge (21-6) before going on to win set two by 14.
The Purple and Gold dominated set number three, winning it 25-5.
The Hawks hit .508 for the match and compiled 30 digs compared to 18 for Medgar-Evers as they hit for .000. The Hawks accumulated 12 service aces as well, compared to the Cougars' one.
