New York, NY - THe Hunter College softball team split a CUNYAC double header with Baruch College on Monday afternoon. The Hawks took game 1 in 2-1 in walk off fashion, and dropped game 2 7-4 in extra innings. The split brought the Hawks to 4-2 in conference play and 9-21 overall.
Game 1 was a low scoring game with the hawks winning 2-1. Hunter out hit Baruch 7-4 for the game and put together three hits in the bottom of the 7th when it mattered most. Scoreless after 1, in the top of the second inning Freshman Mia Faddah reached second base on en error. She advanced to third on a sacrifice and was able to score on a wild pitch. This was the only run that the Bearcats scratched across the plate. Hunter's
Alyssa Curiale spread out 4 hits, only walking 2 and had 4 strikeouts in a complete game win.
In the bottom of the 7th Leah Dillion led off the inning with a base hit, and was moved to second on a sacrifice by Kayla Pilloti.
Kierra Shaw had an infield single, her second of the game, that put runners on the corners.
Paige Witalec hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Dillion when her slide forced the catcher to drop the ball. With Shaw on second base and two outs, Jessica fowler had a single to right field that drove in the game winner for the first game.
Game 2 was move of an offesive tilt between the two squads. The teams combined for 11 runs and 25 hits. Hunter once again outhit Baruch 14-11 but was not able to secure the extra inning win. In game 2 Fowler led the Hawks going 4-5 from the plate.
Kierra Shaw picked up another 2 hits. Baruch jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Megan Bell reached on an error and came around to score on a single from Petrunti. The Hawks answered in the bottom of the second when Adrianna Ramirez walked to lead off the inning, and was driven in on a single from Kayla Pilloti.
Baruch scored 3 in the top of the third inning when two errors by the Hawks combined by two Bearcat hits for the 4-1 lead. Hunter got 1 back when
Olivia Palumbo scored on a infield single from Adrianna Ramirez. At the end of 3 innings it was 4-2 Baruch.
Shaw singled in the bottom of the 4th and came around to score on a Palumbo sacrifice fly ro right field. In the Bottom of the 5th Ramirez reached on a single and advanced to second on an error, She scored on a sadrifice fly from Leah Dillion to tie the game up.
In the bottom of the 7th Hunter loaded the bases with 1 out but was unable to push a run across that led to extra innings. In extra innings with the runner starting on second base. Baruch pushed a run across on a base hit to left field and followed that with a 2 run homerun to put the game away.
Hunter will travel to York on Tuesday April 25th for CUNYAC conference double header!
