Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Hunter Athletics

Hawks Shutout Brooklyn College, 2-0

Brooklyn, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's soccer team garnered its second win of the season in a 2-0 conference shutout at Brooklyn College. The Hawks now improve to 2-1-5 overall and an even 1-1 in  CUNYAC play, while the Bulldogs drop to 1-5.

Hunter came out fighting, putting the pressure on Brooklyn straight from kick-off. Bradley Espejo's relentless effort in the midfield helped lead the team to a win with both an assist and a goal. The first came in the 29th minute of play as Espejo received a corner kick for Ahmed Abukar and tapped it over to Conor Sullivan who netted his first goal of the season.

Despite the Bulldogs 10 shots compared to Hunter's eight in the first half, the visiting squad kept Brooklyn quiet, heading into halftime with a 1-0 edge.

The second goal came just 13 minutes into the second half as Espejo converted a penalty kick at 58:01 after Saleel Eldin was fouled on a fast break to the goal. From their, the Hawks kept their opponents stalled, in part due to Alejandro Sanchez's stellar defensive effort. The Texas native shut down every attempt from Bulldogs, not allowing any shots from his side of the field.

Overall, Hunter finished with 11 shots on goal and 19 total shots compared to Brooklyn's 8 out of 21 total attempts. Matthew Heimowitz had eight saves in the win, his second most this season. Espejo led the team with nine shots and five on goal, followed by Abukar with three total and one on goal, and Sullivan with two and two. Sanchez also managed two shots and one on goal while protecting the Hawks' net.

Hunter returns to the pitch on Wed. October 4, as they host York College in another conference game on Randall's Island. Kick-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
