Bronxville, NY- The Hunter College Women's Tennis team traveled up to Sarah Lawrence to open up the 2023 fall season and the Hawks came home with a 5-4 victory.
Hunter dropped #1 doubles when
Anna Chapko and
Lily McAndrews teamed up and dropped the super set 8-4 to Rao and Conner from SLC. In #2 doubles Mariela Pechalova and Grace Portuese dropped a tight super set 8-6 to Johnson and Palmen. The Hawks grabbed their first point of the night in the #3 doubles with the pairing of Lily O'heir and Julia Aksamentova defeated Spellman and Cohen 8-7.
Starting singles down 2-1 the Hawks rallied for the win by taking home victories in the 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles. Mariela Pechalova took ome her #3 singels with a 6-4, 6-2 straight set victory in her first collegiate match to secure the win for the Hawks, she gathered the 5th and final team point.
In #5 singles Leila Nouri cruised to a victory 6-0, 6-2 to level the match at 2 team points each, Grace Portuese made her singles debut for Hunter and tool home a 4th flight victory 6-0 and 6-1, and Julia Aksamentova remained undefeated on the night with a 6-1, 6-1 win in #6 singles.
Coach Trezos said " I am trilled that we fought for each and everypoint tonight, the team came all they way back more than once with several players in new flights, it was so exciting to see their growth this early in the season."
Hunter will travel on Saturday to St. Joseph's Long Island for a non-conference match with first serve scheduled for 12 noon.
