Bronx, N.Y.- The Hunter College women's basketball team took home a 77-66 win over conference opponent, Lehman, on Wednesday evening, marked by an outstanding 31 point performance from Alexa Charles. The game left both teams sitting a .500 in City University of New York Athletic Conference competition, as the Hawks sit at 7-10 overall while the Lightening are 4-12.
Hunter got right down to business, taking its first lead at 8:34 and building it to a 10 point edge over the next six minutes. The Lightening managed to cut Hunter's lead to five to end the period 20-15. The second period saw a competitive opening, with Lehman evening the score at 29-29 with 5:20 on the clock. The Hawks' duo of Erin Cosio and Charles responded with ten unanswered points as Charles tallied six points in less than three minutes while Cosio went 4-4 from the line. Cosio added another four points before the break, totaling 11 in the first half of play as the two teams headed into the intermission with Hunter up 43-35.Â
Despite outscoring the Hawks 17-15 in the third period, the Purple and Gold held a six point advantage ending into the final quarter of play. Hunter's offense continued to overwhelm the home team as their momentum took over, leading by as much as 17 after Nina Hennessey grabbed her own rebound after a missed free throw to dish one out to Charles for a field goal at 3:17. Lehman managed a 6-0 run to end the quarter but the Hawks' lead was too large as Hunter kept an 11 point lead for a 77-66 conference win.
Charles' double-double of 31 points and 12 rebounds led all players for the night. She also led in steals, grabbing five. Katie Burke and Cosio each added 14 points and five rebounds a piece while Kennedy DeRuy nettted seven points while grabbing six rebounds. Hunter shot 51.9% overall while holding Lehman to 41.9%. The Lightening managed 34.8% from three, over Hunter's  26.3%.
The Hawks return to the court on Jan. 23 as they host Medgar Evers for a 5:00 pm tip.
