Hunter Defeats Medgar Evers, 87-35, For Third Straight Win

New York, N.Y.- In a conference match up at the Sportsplex, the Hunter College women's basketball team dominated Medgar Evers, securing a convincing 87-35 victory. The win improved the Hawks' record to 8-10 overall and 4-3 in the CUNYAC, while Medgar Evers fell to 4-9 overall and 1-6 in conference play.

The opening quarter set the tone for Hunter's dominance, as they outscored Medgar Evers 22-6. Alexa Charles led the charge with effective scoring in the paint, contributing to the team's significant lead. The Hawks maintained control in the second quarter, leading by as much as 26 after a pair of good free throws from Mekkedah Murray. Medgar Evers struggled to find offensive opportunities as Hunter held them in single digit scoring in the second quarter, sending the two teams into halftime with the Hawks up 38-15.

The third quarter saw Hunter's offense firing on all cylinders, with contributions from multiple players. Katie Burke made a huge impact, scoring nine points in the period alone, Medgar Evers attempted to rally with 18 points for the Cougars' most productive quarter but Hunter's defense forced five turnovers in addition to three blocks as the Hawks' offense still outscored the visitors by 10 points in the period, maintaining an impressive 33 point lead heading into the final period of play with a 66-33 advantage. he Hawks sealed the victory in the four quarter with a strong finish, suppressing the Cougars' offense to just two points. The game concluded with a final score of 87-35 in favor of Hunter.

The Hawks finished with four players in double-digits for the night. Sophomore, Charles led the team 21 points, 10 rebounds, and six steals. Nina Hennessey showcased a well-rounded performance with 15 points, including three three point field goals, while grabbing six rebounds. 

Off the bench, two Hawks had career nights, as Murray tallied 17 points her best in the Hawk uniform, and grabbed four steals to match her career-high, also against Medgar Evers earlier this season. Hagar Elwan netted her career-best 13 points including a trio of threes. 

Hunter forced a season-best 33 turnovers, converted for 28 points as they shot for 42.1% from the field, and 41.7% from three-point range.

The Hawks return to the court on Jan. 26 to visit John Jay for another CUNYAC competition.
