New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's basketball team secured a home win against York College, 89-74 in the Hunter Sportsplex on Friday evening. The win puts the Hawks over .500 at 4-3 in league play and 7-11 overall, while York remains at 1-6 in CUNYAC (3-14 overall).
The start of the first half saw the two teams evenly matched, with several ties until a jumper by
Kareem McDonald at 11:04 put the Hawks in front, an edge the team held for the remainder of play. Shortly after, Hunter put together a 9-0 run, marked by four threes from the Hawks, with
Corey Jones Jr. netting two in under a minute to expand the lead to 32-21. The Cardinals were unable to match the home team's pace for the remainder of the first half as the two teams headed into the break with the Hawks at 50-36 advantage.
The second half saw York pick up the pace, with Hunter outscoring it's opponent by just one (39-38) in the second half, but Hunter's early advantage was too much for the Cardinals to overcome. York came within three at 9:51 but the Hawks responded with an astounding 20 unanswered points to solidify their position at 81-61 with 5:31 left on the clock as
Jack Meyers crushed 15 points for the Hawks, leading to the 89-74 conference victory.
Jack Meyer led the Hawks with 22 total points as he shot 5-7 from three. Luke Jakic followed with 17 points and 11 rebounds in addition to a trio of blocks. Jones Jr. also finished in double-digits netting 24 points, while. McDonald produced an all-around effort with 10 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. He also grabbed a team-high four steals on the night, contributing to 14 turnovers, which the Hawks converted for 19 points.
While the Cardinals were not far off from Hunter overall, shooting 43.3%, just behind the Hawks' 43.9%, Hunter dominated from beyond the arc with a season-high 58.3% while holding its opponent to 23.5%.
The Hawks return to the court on Tuesday Jan. 23 as they host Medgar Evers in the Sportsplex at 7:00 p.m.
