New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's basketball team picked up its third straight win on Friday evening at John Jay. The 80-67 defeat pushes the Hawks to 6-3 in the City University of New York Athletic Conference (9-11 overall), while the Bloodhounds dropped to 2-7 in conference and 6-14 overall.
The Bloodhounds got on the board first but the Hawks quickly overwhelmed the team, establishing a double-digit lead by a 10:01 as
William Brown drained a three. The Bloodhounds briefly came within single digits again but just 13 minutes in, Hunter remained in control with a significant advantage for the remainder of the half. John Jay put together a 7-0 spurt with under four minutes to go but Hunter's established lead remained in tact in part due to Jack Meyer's dominating 14 points in the first period of play. The Hawks held a 12 point advantage to send the two teams into the break with Hunter up 40-28.
Hunter continued to push the pace as the second half opened up and at 15:43
Kareem McDonald scored from beyond the arc to give the Hawks a 20 point advantage. John Jay cut the lead to 15 but Hunter held strong, going up by as much as 23. The Bloodhounds attempted a late comeback but ran out of time, as they closed out the game down 13, the closest since the early minutes of the second half. The Hawks consistency paid off as the Purple and Gold secured the road win, 80-67.
Hunter's overall shooting performance was solid, finishing with 44.8% from the field and 44.0% from three-point range. They capitalized on free throws, making 9 out of 14 attempts (64.3%). Defensively, Hunter demonstrated their prowess with 11 steals and 4 blocks.Â
Jack Meyers led the scoring for Hunter with 22 points, supported by a balanced effort from
Casey Meyers (17 points),
Kareem McDonald (13 points), and
Corey Jones Jr. (10 points).
Luka Jakic dominated the boards with 14 rebounds.Â
The Hawks return to the court on Jan. 30 as they host Brooklyn College for a CUNYAC contest in the Hunter Sportsplex for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
