New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's basketball team secured its fourth straight win on Tuesday evening, as they secured a 67-54 win over visiting Brooklyn College. Hunter now sits at 7-3 in CUNYAC and 10-11 overall, while the Bulldogs drop to 4-6 in conference play (4-17 overall).
The game started off with an early 4-4 score, but the Hawks quickly put together a 15-2 run as they built a 13 point lead (19-6) just under the ten minute mark. Hunter steadily increased its leading, going up by as much as 17 at 38-21 with 2:07 left in the half. The Bulldogs were able to tack on a few more points with successful free throws but were ultimately overwhelmed as the first half came to an end with the Hawks held a dominating 39-24 lead.
Brooklyn scored the first four points of the second half, cutting the lead to single digits for the first time in over eight minutes of play. The Hawks continued to push the pace, building the lead back up to 17 at 11:57 after back-to-back threes from
Corey Jones Jr. and
Jack Meyers compounded with one from the line added by
Luka Jakic gave the home team a 51-34 advantage. Shortly after, Hunter took its largest lead of the game when J. Meyers netted seven straight points for the Hawks. Despite outscoring Hunter 30-28 in the second half, Brooklyn was unable to keep up with the Hawks as the game concluded with a 14 point victory for Hunter.
J. Meyers led all scorers for the night with 22 points, shooting .500 overall, while grabbing nine rebounds. Jones Jr. followed with 14 points and five rebounds. Jakic continued to be a force on the boards, grabbing 10 in addition to his seven points.
Hunter shot 44.4% overall (48.3%. from three-point range) and 63.% from the line, while the Bulldogs averaged 33.9% overall, with a slim 7.1% from beyond the arc, and 73.3% from the free throw line. The Purple and Gold forced 13 turnovers, compared to the visitor's eight but the two teams were evenly matched at 37 rebounds each.
The Hawks continued their season on Feb. 1 as they travel across town to Baruch for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
