Charles' Triple Double Leads Hunter to 76-40 Road Win over Medgar Evers

Brooklyn, N.Y.- The Hunter College women's basketball team secured a conference win on the road against Medgar Evers, 76-40, on Thursday evening. With the victory, the Hawks improved to 5-8 overall and 1-1 in CUNYAC, while the Cougars dropped to 4-4 and 1-1 in the conference.

Medgar Evers took a 9-6 lead early in the first quarter, but the Hawks responded with a 12-0 run, taking an 18-9 lead with just over a minute left in the first period. Alexa Charles and Erin Cosio each contributed six points during this stretch. The Cougars showed a burst of energy, logging six straight points as the two teams started the second quarter, with Hunter holding an 18-15 advantage.

The Cougars kept it close to start the second period, but the Hawks took off with a 10-1 run, fueled by contributions from five different players. The teams headed into halftime with Hunter leading 32-25.

Hunter dominated the third and fourth quarters, scoring the first 13 points in the third to lead 45-25, growing its lead to as much as 22 before entering the fourth with a 51-34 advantage. In the final quarter, the Hawks outscored the hosts 25-6, allowing only three Medgar Evers field goals as the Purple and Gold secured a 36-point victory over their conference opponent.

The Hawks were led by Charles, who recorded a triple-double with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and an impressive 10 steals. Cosio added 11 points, recorded a team-high eight assists, while grabbing five rebounds and a trio of steals. Additionally, Kennedy DeRuy contributed 11 points, three steals, and a pair of assists. Eliah Yode recorded a season-high six steals in the competition in addition to her eight points.

Hunter shot 36.1% overall and 26.9% from beyond the arc, compared to their opponent's 34.7% and 12.5%. The Hawks capitalized on their 33 steals, converting 54 points off turnovers, while the Cougars grabbed 12 steals, converting to only 11 points. Despite Medgar Evers' five blocks and 48 rebounds compared to Hunter's one and 41, the Hawks held their opponent to single digits in each of the final two quarters and secured 16 second-chance points as 22 of the team's total rebounds were on the offensive side of the ball.

The Hawks continue conference play on Jan. 5 as they host John Jay in the Hunter Sportsplex. Tip-off is slated for 5:00 p.m.
