Hunter Secures 87-76 Home Win over John Jay

New York, NY - The Hunter College men's basketball team resumed conference play with an 87-76 win over John Jay ay home on Friday evening. With the win, the Hawks advance to 2-1 in conference and 5-9, while John Jay dipped to 1-2 in the CUNYAC and 5-9 overall.

The Bloodhounds got out to a quick start but Hunter responded with an 18-6 run as they led 18-12. The Hawks continued their display of dominance for the remainder of the half, marked by a trio of threes from Ryan Lau as he contributed to Hunter's 56.3% from beyond the arc for the opening half. The Purple and Gold was responsible for eight of the final 15 points in the first period as they headed into the intermission with a 48-33 edge.

Earlier in the second half of play the Hawks took their largest lead of the contest (53-33) as Kareem McDonald drained a three from an assist by Casey Meyers. Hunter remained up by double-digits until a 18-9 run from John Jay put the visitors within eight at 79-71 with under five minutes left in play. The Bloodhounds came closest at 3:35 when a pair of free throws drained the deficit to six. Former Bloodhound, Corey Jones Jr. responded with a three while the Hawks suppressed John Jay's offense to just two additional points as they took advantage draining 4 of 5 free throws to lock in the 87-76 win.

Four Hawks finished in double figures, led by Jack Meyers, who tallied 18 points on 7 of 13 shooting and 4 of 5  from three-point range.  McDonald added 17 points with a pair of steals while Luka Jakic notched a double-double, with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Jones Jr. rounded out the double digit scoring with 11 points including three three pointers. 

Hunter shot 52.5% overall and 50% from three, compared to John Jay's 45 and 47.4 percentages.

The Hawks continue their season on Wednesday Jan. 10 as they head to Brooklyn College for a 7:00 p.m. CUNYAC matchup.
