Jamaica, N.Y.- The Hunter College's men's soccer team (3-10-1, 1-2-0 CUNYAC) delivered a commanding performance, defeating York College (1-8-1, 0-3-0 CUNYAC) 6-0 on the road on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks took control early and never relented, scoring two goals in the first half and adding four more in the second, showcasing their offensive firepower.
The Hawks opened the scoring at the 10:25 mark when Bradley Espejo found the back of the net off an assist from Kevin Velez. Just four minutes later, Ben Avakook extended the lead to 2-0, again with Velez providing the assist. Despite several attempts from York players, Hunter's goalkeeper Matthew Heimowitz made crucial saves to preserve the clean sheet heading into halftime.
The Purple and Gold quickly added to their lead after the break. In the 47th minute, Espejo scored his second goal of the match, assisted by Samuel Benson. Less than two minutes later, Saleel Eldin capitalized on an assist from Espejo to push the score to 4-0. The onslaught continued with Ahmed Abukar scoring in the 69th minute, with Avakook contributing the assist, before Rafael Villacres sealed the game in the 88th minute off a David Zlobinsky assist.
Espejo was the standout performer with two goals and an assist, taking seven shots, four of which were on target. Avakook also had an impressive game, registering a goal and an assist while firing ten shots, four on goal. Eldin contributed a goal from his five shots, two of which were on target. In goal, Heimowitz was solid, making five saves over 90 minutes to secure the shutout.
Hunter dominated the game, taking 41 shots, with 16 on target, while York managed 12 shots, only five of which were on goal. York's goalkeeper George Molina was kept busy, making ten saves despite the lopsided scoreline.
The Hawks return to the pitch on Oct. 14 as they travel to Lehman for another conference match. Kick-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
