Women's Tennis Upsets Baruch to Win CUNYAC Championship

Flushing, N.Y.- In a thrilling showdown at the USTA, the #2 Hunter College women's tennis team edged out the top-seeded Baruch College Bearcats, clinching the 2024 CUNYAC Women's Tennis Championship with a final score of 5-4. This hard-fought victory crowned Hunter as champions, ending Baruch's undefeated conference streak.

Hunter's journey to victory was marked by an exceptional performance from Julia Aksamentova, who emerged as the match MVP. Aksamentova played a decisive role in singles, where she won a nail-biting tiebreaker against Maria Calvo (7-6, 8-6) in the fourth spot—a pivotal match that swung the overall outcome in Hunter's favor. Her resilience in the tightest match of the day exemplified Hunter's determination to reclaim the title.

In the singles matchups, Hunter clinched four out of six matches. Summer Nietubicz and Sree Kolla delivered dominant performances in the no. 5 and no. 6 singles spots, securing straight-set wins. Though Baruch's top players, Ava Deguzman and Natalie Bergmann, won the No. 1 and No. 2 singles.

Doubles play saw Baruch take an early lead with Deguzman and Bergmann shutting out Hunter's top pair (8-0). But Hunter responded as Sara Novo and Sree Kolla won their no. 2 doubles match, while Sara Contreras and Ava Cooper brought home another win in the no. 3 doubles slot.

With a final score of 5-4, Hunter College emerged victorious, adding another CUNYAC championship to their legacy and showcasing remarkable teamwork, grit, and the undeniable impact of their MVP, Julia Aksamentova.
