Oneonta, N.Y.- The Hunter College wrestling team delivered a commanding performance at the NYS Tournament in Oneonta, N.Y., earning three All-State titles and showcasing exceptional depth and talent across the roster.
Sophomore
Botensky Bauzile (133 lbs) headlined the event with his second consecutive All-State honor, finishing third. After a narrow 13-9 loss to NYU's James Carlock in the opening round, Bauzile stormed back with four consecutive wins, including an 11-9 decision over Ithaca's Francisco Muriel, a pin against Nassau's Joe Ramirez, and a medical forfeit victory over Niagara's Michael Catanzaro. Improving on last year's fifth-place finish, Bauzile demonstrated growth and resilience in a highly competitive bracket.
Freshman Jayden Medina (149 lbs) made an unforgettable debut, earning his first collegiate All-State honors with a fourth-place finish. Despite a tough opening-round loss to Nassau's Cornelius Jones (4-1), Medina rattled off five straight victories, capped by four bonus-point wins. He recorded pins against Albany's Thomas McCuiston (1:11) and Elmira's Kaiden Ellis (2:09), along with dominant technical falls over Jamestown's Nicholas Ewan (19-2) and Army Prep's Marcus Reum (18-0). Medina's performance solidified his status as a rising star in the Hawks' lineup.
Sophomore Hadi Rehman (184 lbs) also achieved his first All-State recognition with a fifth-place finish, highlighted by two pins against Brockport's Travis Robinson-Becker, including a decisive fall in just 45 seconds during the fifth-place bout. The Hawks also celebrated strong contributions from other wrestlers. Freshman Justin Riello (149 lbs) secured two pins against Ithaca opponents, while Martin Palomeque (157 lbs) earned a pin over Oneonta's Matt Coffey (2:31) and a 12-4 major decision against RPI's Arcangelo Losee. Fellow rookie Jack Kent (157 lbs) added an overtime thriller to his day, defeating RIT's Borese Antropov 7-4 after pinning Onondaga's Joseph Martini (2:20).
Heavyweight Dane Henry impressed in his debut at 285 lbs, earning a pin over Albany's Leomar Velasquez (1:52) and a narrow 4-3 decision over Utica's Seth Northrop. Sophomore Michael Douglas (125 lbs) posted an 11-2 major decision against Utica's TJ Monahan, while freshman Val Arakelov (174 lbs) pinned RPI's Julian Counterman (2:19). The Hawks' collective efforts made a powerful statement at the NYS Tournament, with seasoned veterans and promising newcomers alike proving their mettle. With such depth and determination, Hunter College wrestling is poised for a standout season ahead.
The Hawks return to the mat on Friday Dec. 6 as they host New Jersey State University in the team's first home match of the season, to kick-off Hunter's 2024 Homecoming in the Sportsplex.
