Hunter Falls on the Road to Stevens

Hoboken, N.J.- The Hunter College women's basketball fell in a closely contested match on the road against Stevens on Tuesday evening.

The Hawks (3-3) established a quick lead, jumping out to 5-0 after Eliah Yode went two-for-two from the line, coupled with an early three from Alexa Charles. Hunter maintained its lead for much of the first quarter, heading into the start of the second period with an 18-17 edge. The Purple and Gold remained competitive for the remainder of the half, battling back from two seven point deficits, courtesy of crucial offensive boards by the Hawks. After the intermission, the Ducks (3-0) were able to grow their lead despite Hunter's first half energy, as a decisive third quarter saw the Hawks' offense cool off.

The Purple and Gold demonstrated grit, fighting back in the final period of play, as they outscored their opponent 21-18 including a 7-2 run but were unable to overcome Stevens' lead from the prior quarters, ultimately falling, 64-79.

Alexa Charles and Erin Cosio led scoring for Hunter with double-digit performances from each captain. Charles put together a healthy stat line, demonstrating her skill on both ends of the court. She knocked down 34 points while shooting .500 from beyond the arc and 6-8 from the line. She continued, grabbing nine rebounds and five steals in addition to a pair of blocks. Cosio drained three three-pointers and added five rebounds with three assists in 36 minutes on the floor, showcasing the senior's stamina and play making ability.

Kimberly Lau and Kennedy DeRuy grabbed seven rebounds with four offensive boards each. With DeRuy's energy off the bench alternating with Lau, the two played a key role in the Hawks' 13 second chance points. Yode added eight points of her own in the battle while Makkedah Murray led the team with four assists.

Despite the loss, Hunter out-shot Stevens from three, with 34.5% compared to the Ducks' 16.7%.

Hunter returns to the court on Dec. 4 at Sarah Lawrence for a 7:00 p.m. matchup, before opening conference play in Hunter's 2024 Homecoming celebration against Baruch on Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m.
