Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

C. Meyers Records Double-Double in Loss to Anna Maria

Willmantic, Conn.- Despite a career-best performance from Casey Meyers, the Hunter College men's basketball team fell 85-82 in an overtime thriller to Anna Maria College on Monday afternoon. The game, part of the Eastern Conference Invitational hosted by Eastern Connecticut State University, saw the Hawks drop to 2-9 on the season while the Cats improved to 3-9.

Meyers, a senior, delivered his first career double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and two steals, solidifying himself as a key contributor in the closely contested matchup.

The Hawks started strong, grabbing an early lead in the first half when Casey Meyers knocked down a jumper to put Hunter ahead 12-10. Hunter maintained control for the remainder of the half, shooting an efficient 43.5% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Anna Maria struggled offensively, managing just 37.5% overall and a mere 15.4% from three-point range.

Hunter carried its momentum into the second half, extending its lead to as many as 14 points. However, a late surge from Anna Maria saw the Cats claw their way back into the game. With 3:06 remaining in regulation, Anna Maria took its first lead of the contest. The two teams traded blows down the stretch, with Donovon Cola's fast-break layup cutting the deficit to one and his clutch free throw tying the game at 77. After Anna Maria responded with a bucket, Sal Saputo sank two free throws in the final seconds to force overtime.

In the extra period, Anna Maria gained the early edge and held off a late Hunter rally. A pair of free throws from Gene Propper brought the Hawks within one, but they were unable to capitalize further as the Cats secured the 85-82 victory.

Saputo delivered an outstanding performance, leading all scorers with 30 points while adding nine rebounds, four assists, three steals, and a block. Cola chipped in with 14 points and five rebounds, including three on the offensive glass, while Jack Meyers rounded out the key contributors with 10 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Despite the loss, the Hawks showcased notable individual performances and growing team chemistry as they continue to refine their game.

Hunter returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 6, hosting Middlebury College at 5:00 p.m. at the Hunter Sportsplex.
