BOX SCORE New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College women's basketball team closed out regular season home contests with a 77-50 over York College at the Hunter Sportsplex on Saturday afternoon. The win marks the Hawks' fifth straight victory as they improve to 13-11 overall and 9-4 in CUNYAC.
From the opening tip-off, Hunte set the tone for the game, controlling the pace and dictating the flow of play. The first quarter saw the Hawks establish an early lead, outscoring York (0-15, 0-9 CUNYAC) 24-14. This momentum continued throughout the game, with Hunter maintaining a comfortable advantage in each subsequent quarter. The Purple and Gold extended its lead to 20 in the second period, as they held the Cardinals to just eight points, heading into the intermission up 42-22.
The Hawks opened up the third quarter with a 16-0 run, including nine from Alexa Charles. In the final quarter, Hunter sealed the deal with a dominant performance, with contributions from Eliah Yode and Kennedy DeRuy off the bench. Despite York's efforts to rally, Hunter's defense remained solid, securing the win with a final score of 77-50.
Leading the charge for the Purple and Gold was Charles, who delivered a sensational performance with 24 points, nine rebounds, and eight steals. Charles showcased her versatility and scoring ability, consistently finding ways to impact the game on both ends of the court. Erin Cosio also made significant contributions for Hunter, chipping in with 16 points including three from beyond the arc, and three rebounds.
Defensively, Hunter stifled York's offense, holding the visitors to just 33.3% overall, compared to Hunter's 45.1% . The Hawks' defensive intensity translated into success on the offensive end, allowing them to capitalize on fast-break opportunities and convert 33 turnovers into 37 points.
Despite their efforts, York was unable to mount a significant comeback, as Hunter maintained control and secured the victory.
The Hawks return to the court to conclude regular season play as they travel to York College on Tuesday for rematch of today's game at 5:00 p.m.
