New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College women's basketball team extended its win streak to four after an 83-64 win over conference opponent Lehman College at the Hunter Sportsplex on Friday evening. The Hawks celebrated their annual Senior Night, honoring
Nina Hennessy. The win pushed Hunter to 13-11 overall and 9-4 in conference play, while Lehman dropped to 7-11 and 6-7 in the City University of New York Athletic Conference.
The Hawks honored Hennessy, a two year member of the team prior to tip-off. The senior started in all 20 games for Hunter this year accumulating a total of 103 points total this season,.
From the opening tip-off, Hunter displayed its offensive prowess, taking control of the game early on. The Hawks stormed to a commanding 25-9 lead, led by standout performances from Alexa Charles and Katie Burke, the Hawks built a comfortable lead in the first half. Charles was a force to be reckoned with in the paint, finishing with a game-high 21 points and showcasing her dominance on the boards with 15 rebounds. Burke added 16 points of her own, including a pair of crucial three-pointers to keep the momentum in Hunter's favor.
Lehman fought back in the second quarter, but Hunter maintained their lead with a balanced scoring effort from Erin Cosio, and Eliah Yode, who contributed 11, and 10 points respectively. Despite Lehman's efforts to narrow the gap, Hunter headed into halftime with a 45-19 advantage.
The third quarter saw Lehman mounting a comeback, outscoring Hunter 19-14. Ramatoulaye Diallo led Lehman's offensive charge, finishing the game with a game-high 27 points. However, Hunter's resilience and solid team defense kept them in control as they entered the final quarter with a 59-38 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Hunter sealed the victory with composed play and continued contributions from their key players. Despite Lehman's efforts to rally late in the game, Hunter's defense held firm, securing an impressive 83-64 win.
The Hawks shot for 49.3% overall, 27.3% from beyond the arc and 68.8% from the line, compared to the Lightening's 46.0% from the field, 33.3% from three-point range and 66.7% from the free-throw line.
Hunter continues its season tomorrow in their final home game of the regular season as they host York College for a 12:00 p.m. tip-off.
