Hunter Sweeps Medgar Evers in Conference Double Header

New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's volleyball team came away with a perfect performance, sweeping Medgar Evers in a conference double header on Thursday evening, both in which they took wins in straight sets as the Hawks moved to 9-8 overall and 7-1 in CUNYAC play, while the Cougars  sit at 0-9 (0-7 CUNYAC).

Game 1
The Hawks started the first match off strong, securing a 25-12 win in the first set, marked by Hunter's 10-2 run that finished the set out quickly. The second set saw Medgar Evers grab a lead at 4-3 early on but Hunter was quick to overtake it's opponent. Despite staying within four for the first half of the second set. the Cougars were exhausted by the home team's offensive tactics and were unable to score beyond 16 points as the Hawks took at 2-0 lead in the match. The final set saw early signs of life from Medgar Evers, after trailing the Hawks the visitors' managed four straight points to tie up the set at 10-10. The Hawks quickly responded taking back the lead and from there capitalized on errors from the Cougars to take the final set at 25-20, securing a 3-0 win in the first match of the night.

Andrew Estiverne stood out for the Hawks as he logged six kills, four aces, and four digs. Austin White also tallied six kills in addition to three aces and three blocks of his own, while Ted Kim added five kills, four service aces, and a team-high five digs. Brandon Yeh paced the Hawks in the win with 24 assists.

Game 2
The second game saw the Hawks emphasize their dominance, holding Medgar Evers to 15 points or less in each set. Set no. 1 was an striking offensive performance in which the Hawks took the set in 25-6. The second set proved not much different with Hunter winning 25-11 as they went on multiple scoring runs. The day's final set showed more effort from the Cougars but it was still no match as the Hawks secured another 3-0 win with an 25-15 victory in the third set. 

Kyle Foley led the team with eight kills in the match, followed by Annes Deljanin with seven and Matisse Lee-Maarek with five. Foley and Lee-Maarek each had three service aces to lead the team while Lee-Maarek, Demetri Gournelos, and Cooper Moran all added three blocks a piece and Muhammad Al-Amine Mbaye tallied four digs in the win.

The Hawks return to the court on Saturday March 16 as they host CCNY at 12:00 p.m.
