Revere, Mass.- The Hunter College softball team won both games in a road double-header at Lesley University of Sunday afternoon, to improve to 6-8 overall, while Lesley dipped to 3-16.
Game 1: Hunter 6, Lesley 5
The day started off with an close 6-5 victory for the Hawks. Hunter came out strong, with
Olivia Palumbo leading off with a single through the left side, ultimately scoring the first run of the game.
Sonia Rosales Rosenthal later hit a single up the middle, sending
Grace Basil home to give Hunter a 2-0 edge at the top of the first.
Lesley fought back, narrowing the gap in the first few innings, but Hunter remained relentless. A standout moment came in the second inning as Adriana Ramirez's triple to right field fueled Hunter's momentum, followed by a clutch hit from Jesesica Fowler, bringing home two more runs.
The game intensified in the fifth inning when Lesley rallied, capitalizing on some defensive errors to tie the score. However, Hunter refused to back down. In the top of the seventh inning, with the game hanging in the balance, Ramirez's decisive single to right field, driving in the go-ahead run, proved to be the game-winning moment.
Alyssa Curiale started on the mound for the Hawks, facing 17 batters with three strikeouts throughout four innings. Brielle Stacksavage (3-0) was credited with the win, pitching for three innings with two strikeouts.
Game 2: Hunter 4, Lesley 3
The second game of the day saw another seventh inning surge for the Hawks, to propel the team to a 4-3 win.
The match up started with a defensive battle, with both teams holding strong through the first few innings. Lesley managed to score first in the second inning, taking an early lead. However, Hunter's offense came alive in the top of the sixth inning. as Sophia Perez led the charge with an impressive triple to left field. Basil followed up with a crucial RBI ground out, bringing Perez home and narrowing the gap.
The momentum swung fully in the Hawks' favor in the top of the seventh inning. Ramirez's single ignited the team, and Fowler's walk set the stage for Elizabath Thompson's game-changing moment as she hit a powerful homer to left field, driving in three runs and putting Hunter in the lead.
The Hawks' pitching was solid throughout the game, with T'ea Panagakos delivering a standout performance on the mound. Panagakos pitched a complete game, allowing only three runs (one earned) on seven hits, with two strikeouts and a walk.
