BOX SCORE 2 Purchase, N.Y.- The Hunter College softball team faced a tough challenge in a road double header at Manhattanville College on Friday evening, falling in both games as the Hawks dropped to 6-10, while the Valiants were pushed to 17-7.
Game 1: Hunter 0, Manhattanville 8
Manhattanville took an early lead in the first inning, capitalizing on wild pitches and errors to score two runs. The Valiants' momentum carried into the second inning, where they exploded with six more runs.
Hunter's offense struggled to get going. Paige Witalec and Grace Basil managed the only two hits for Hunter, with Basil recording a single and Witalec reaching on a single as well.
Basil started on the mound for the Hawks but faced a tough Manhattanville lineup, giving up seven runs (six earned) in just 1.1 innings. T'ea Panagakos came in for relief, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing one run on five hits.
Defensively, Nicole Bowe had a strong game at third base, making key plays to help limit Manhattanville's scoring opportunities, despite the loss.
Game 2: Hunter 0, Manhattanville 6
Manhattanville's momentum carried through the second game of the day, taking an early lead in the first inning, capitalizing on hits to score two runs. They added to their lead in the second inning with two more runs, taking a 4-0 edge over the Hawks.
Hunter struggled to generate offense throughout the game, as Olivia Palumbo and Bowe were the lone contributors with a hit each. Despite some promising moments, Hunter was unable to convert its opportunities into runs.
On the mound, Brielle Staskavag started for Hunter but faced a tough lineup, giving up six runs on 13 hits over 4.2 innings. A. Curiale came in for relief and managed to hold the opposing team scoreless for 1.1 innings.
The Hawks continue their season with the team's first home conference double header against John Jay on Saturday April 20 at Randall's Island. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
