Bronx, N.Y.- The Hunter College softball team swept Lehman in a conference double-header on the road on Monday evening, improving to 6-3 in CUNYAC competition, and 11-15 overall, while the Lightening dropped to 7-16-1 and 3-6 in league play.
Game 1: Hunter 10, Lehman 1
From the opening pitch, it was evident that Hunter was determined to seize control of the game. Led by starting pitcher
Alyssa Curiale, who delivered a masterful performance on the mound, the Hawks' defense held Lehman to just one run throughout the entirety of the game. Curiale's precise pitching kept Lehman's batters guessing, as she allowed only three hits while striking out seven batters in a complete game effort.
The scoring commenced in the top of the first inning when Olivia Palumbo, the lead-off hitter for the Hawks displayed her speed on the bases, advancing to third on an error before crossing home plate on a single by Adriana Ramirez. However, Lehman quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1.
Undeterred, the Hawks continued to press their advantage, with Sophia Perez delivering a powerful two-run home run in the fourth inning to give Hunter a 3-1 lead. From there, the floodgates opened for the Hawks, as they tacked on seven more runs over the course of the game to secure the convincing victory.
Offensively, Hunter was led by a balanced attack, with multiple players contributing to the scoring effort. Notably, Paige Witalec drove in four runs, including a crucial two-run double in the sixth inning to extend the Hawks' lead. Additionally, Palumbo and Perez showcased their speed on offense, each swiping a pair of stolen bases to keep the pressure on Lehman's defense.
Despite the Lightning's best efforts, they were unable to contain Hunter's relentless offensive onslaught. Pitcher Jireh Espina battled valiantly on the mound for Lehman but ultimately succumbed to Hunter's relentless lineup, surrendering 10 runs on nine hits over seven innings of work.
Game 2: Hunter 11, Lehman 4
Lehman was able to muster a bit more offense in the second game but continued to be overwhelmed by the Hawks' offense. From the first pitch, the Hawks asserted their presence on the field, with Palumbo leading the charge with her dynamic performance at the plate. She set the tone early with a single in the opening frame, eventually rounding the bases to notch the first run for Hunter. She later showcased her power with a towering home run in the seventh inning, driving in two crucial runs to extend the Hawks' lead.
Hunter's offensive onslaught continued throughout the game, with multiple players contributing to the scoring effort. Sonia R. Rosenthal delivered a stellar performance, going 3-for-3 with a walk and an RBI to bolster the Hawks' offense. Additionally, Witalec and Ramirez provided key hits, each driving in two runs to keep the pressure on Lehman's pitching staff.
On the defensive side, Hunter received a solid outing from starting pitcher Nicole Bowe, who held Lehman to just three runs over 2.2 innings of work. T'ea Panagakos entered the game in relief and delivered a stellar performance, stifling Lehman's offense over 4.1 innings while allowing only one run to secure the win.
Despite Lehman's efforts to mount a comeback, Hunter's pitching and defense proved to be too much to handle.
The Hawks return home tomorrow for non-conference doubleheader against Mount Saint Mary at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. on Randall's Island.
