New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College women's softball team fell in a pair of home games against non-conference opponents, Mount Saint Mary College to drop to 11-17 on the season.
Game 1: Hunter 4 MSMC 6
The Knights made their presence known early on, but it was Hunter who struck first blood in the bottom of the 1st inning.
Olivia Palumbo sparked the offense with a powerful double down the right-field line, later crossing the plate to give Hunter an early lead.
However, MSMC responded swiftly, showcasing their offensive prowess in the following innings. Despite Hunter's efforts to hold them off, the Knights managed to put up a string of runs in the 3rd and 4th innings, gradually building a lead.
Though the Hawks fought back valiantly, led by standout performances from Olivia Palumbo and Paige Witalec, they ultimately fell short in their comeback bid. The Knights' solid defense and timely hitting proved to be the difference-maker, securing them the victory on the road.
Brielle Staskavage took the mound to start the game, delivering a solid performance in the early innings despite facing tough opposition. Staskavage displayed control and composure, keeping the Knights' hitters off balance with her pitches. Staskavage faced adversity in the 4th inning, as the Knights managed to capitalize on scoring opportunities and push across several runs. Despite the tough inning, Hunter's pitching remained steadfast, with Alyssa Curiale stepping in to provide crucial innings of relief.
Game 2: Hunter 7, MSMC 17
The second game of the day the Hawks started the game strong, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Olivia Palumbo drew a walk and later scored on a wild pitch, while
Paige Witalec capitalized on a fielding error to bring in another run.
However, the Knights quickly responded in the top of the second inning, putting together a four-run rally to take the lead. Despite Hunter's efforts to keep the game close, the Knights continued to pile on runs, extending their lead with each passing inning.
The Hawks fought back with determination, mounting a comeback effort in the later innings. Led by strong offensive performances from Sophia Perez and Sonia R. Rosenthal, who both delivered key hits, Hunter managed to put up runs on the board.
Despite their efforts, Hunter's pitching faced a tough challenge containing the Knights' lineup. T`ea Panagakos got the start on the mound, but Alyssa Curiale and Brielle Staskavage also saw action in relief.
In the end, the Knights' offense proved to be too much for Hunter to handle, as they secured a decisive victory on the road. Though the outcome wasn't in their favor, the Hawks look to secure a win in their next double header against NYU on May 2nd.
