Poughkeepsie, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's volleyball team traveled to to Poughkeepsie for the Vassar College Trimatch this Saturday to conclude regular season play. The Hawks fell in each match as they dropped to 15-12 overall.
Game 1: Springfield 3 Hunter 0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-21)
The Hawks started the day off against Springfield (18-16). From the opening serve, Springfield set the tone with their aggressive play, quickly establishing a lead in the first set. Despite Hunter's best efforts to mount a comeback, Springfield's strong attack proved difficult to counter. The set ended with Springfield taking the lead with a score of 25-17.
The second set saw Hunter struggling to find their rhythm as Springfield continued to dominate with their powerful spikes and strategic plays. Hunter fought hard, but Springfield's consistency and solid defense proved to be the difference-maker. With a score of 25-11, Springfield secured their second set victory of the match.
In the third set, Hunter showed resilience, battling point for point in an effort to extend the match. However, Springfield maintained their composure and capitalized on key opportunities, ultimately closing out the set with a score of 25-21, thus clinching the match in straight sets.Â
Despite the loss, Matisse Lee-Maarek led the Hawks with nine kills, followed by Muhammad Al-Amine Mbaye, with seven. Sergio Aguado, Annes Deljanin, and Demetri Gournelo each added three digs, while Cooper Moran paced the team with 25 assists.
Game 2: Vassar 3, Hunter 0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-22)
The Hawks faced off against Vassar for their second match of the day.Â
Despite a spirited effort, Hunter ultimately fell short, succumbing to a 3-0 defeat against a formidable Vassar squad.
Right from the outset, Vassar demonstrated their offensive prowess, quickly establishing a lead in the first set. Hunter fought valiantly, matching Vassar point for point in a closely contested battle. However, Vassar's efficiency and precision on the attack proved decisive as they secured the first set with a score of 25-22.
In the second set, Vassar continued to apply pressure, maintaining their momentum with a relentless offensive assault. Despite Hunter's efforts to rally, Vassar's cohesive teamwork and strategic play kept them at bay. With a score of 25-17, Vassar claimed their second set victory of the match, putting Hunter on the back foot.
Determined to stage a comeback, Hunter came out strong in the third set, refusing to go down without a fight. Both teams traded blows in a thrilling display of volleyball prowess, with neither side willing to concede an inch. However, Vassar's experience and composure under pressure proved decisive as they closed out the set with a score of 25-22, thus sealing the match in straight sets.
Loss aside, Moran showcased an impressive performance, leading the Hawks with 20 assists  and seven digs, in addition to a service ace and two blocks. Al-Amine Mbaye led the team in kills with seven in addition to an ace, four digs, and three blocks.
The Hawks look to the post season as they await seeding for the CUNYAC Tournament, slated to start on Tuesday April 9th.
