New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College women's basketball team extended its win streak to six, in a decisive 82-50 victory over Lehman College on Wednesday evening at the Hunter College Sportsplex. The Hawks (11-4, 6-0 CUNYAC) remained unbeaten in conference play, delivering a balanced performance on both ends of the court.
Hunter set the tone early, outscoring Lehman 20-14 in the first quarter. Junior guard Alexa Charles led the charge, scoring 10 of her game-high 33 points in the opening period. Charles was relentless, driving to the basket and sparking the Hawks' offensive rhythm. Gianna Henriques also made her presence felt, contributing key rebounds and a block while scoring inside.
The Hawks tightened their grip in the second quarter, holding Lehman to just seven points. Erin Cosio provided a spark, sinking two timely three-pointers, while Charles continued to dominate, adding another eight points. The Purple and Gold took a commanding 38-21 lead into halftime, with their defense forcing numerous turnovers and converting them into fast-break points.
The Purple and Gold maintained its momentum in the third quarter, with Charles once again leading the way. She showcased her versatility, combining scoring with defensive prowess, as the Hawks extended their lead. Katie Burke added a long-range jumper, while Henriques anchored the paint, recording several offensive rebounds and second-chance points.
The final quarter was a showcase of depth for Hunter, as contributions came from across the roster. Kimberly Lau added a fast-break layup, and freshman Kennedy DeRuy nailed a three-pointer to widen the gap. By the final whistle, the Hawks had secured a 36-point lead, their largest of the game.
Two Hawks grabbed double-doubled, with Charles tallying 33 points, 10 rebounds, and nine steals. Henriques added 14 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocks, while Burke chipped in 10 points and eight assists. The Hawks shot an efficient 60.3% from the field, dominating in points off turnovers and in the paint.
With this victory, Hunter solidified their place atop the CUNYAC standings. They return to action on Friday as they travel to York for another conference game. TIp-off is slated for 5:00 p.m.
