Jamaica, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's basketball team captured a thrilling 81-77 victory over York College on the road Friday evening, improving their record to 4-14 overall and 2-5 in the CUNYAC.
The game started with Hunter establishing their rhythm early as Jack Meyers, who had an exceptional night, drained a three-pointer on the first possession. J. Meyers, the team's anchor, delivered a standout performance with a game-high 31 points and 14 rebounds. Despite Hunter's early momentum, York (2-14, 0-7 CUNYAC) responded swiftly, leading to multiple ties and lead changes throughout the opening half. Sal Saputo provided a spark off the bench, nailing four three-pointers and contributing 23 points overall. His timely scoring kept the Hawks within striking distance as they closed the half with a narrow 40-37 lead.
In the second half, Hunter's offensive efficiency improved significantly, shooting 46.88% from the field. J. Meyers continued to lead the charge, with Casey Meyers and Donovon Cola also stepping up. C. Meyers  added 11 points, including a clutch three-pointer late in the second half, while Cola chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds, asserting himself in key moments.
With less than three minutes remaining, Hunter clung to a slim lead. A pivotal sequence saw J. Meyers sink a deep three-pointer to extend the Hawks' advantage to 77-70. Despite a late push from York, the Purple and Gold held its composure at the free-throw line, with Saputo and J. Meyers converting critical shots to seal the victory.
Hunter outrebounded York 44-44, with their dominance on the boards and timely defensive stops proving decisive. The Hawks also capitalized on second-chance opportunities and points off turnovers, highlighting their gritty effort.
Hunter will look to build on this momentum in their next CUNYAC matchup as they travel to Medgar Evers on Jan. 28 for a 7:00 p.m. start.
