BOX SCORE Brooklyn, N.Y. — The Hunter College men's basketball team fought until the final buzzer but came up short in overtime, falling 73-68 to Medgar Evers on Monday night at Cougars Cave. Despite a strong performance from Sal Saputo and a dominant rebounding effort from Jayden Jarret, the Hawks (4-10, 2-6 CUNYAC) couldn't hold off the Cougars in the extra period.
Hunter started strong, taking an early lead behind back-to-back three-pointers from Casey Meyers. The Hawks maintained control throughout the first half, with Saputo pacing the offense. Hunter's defense held firm, limiting Medgar Evers' perimeter shooting to just 8.3% from beyond the arc. At the break, the Hawks led 31-29.
The second half remained a tight battle, with both teams exchanging baskets. Jack Meyers found his rhythm, scoring 12 of his 16 points in the period, while Jarret continued to dominate the boards, finishing with a game-high 14 rebounds. A late three-pointer from Saputo put Hunter ahead 60-58, but Medgar Evers responded to force overtime at 62-62.
In the extra frame, Hunter struggled from the field, shooting just 1-for-5, while Medgar Evers capitalized at the free-throw line. Saputo, who led all scorers with 25 points, kept the Hawks within striking distance, but a late turnover and a pair of free throws from the Cougars sealed the loss.
Hunter will look to bounce back as it returns to conference play on Jan. 31 as they host John Jay for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off in the Sportsplex.
