New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College's women's basketball team put on a commanding performance Tuesday evening, dispatching Medgar Evers 79-53 at the Hunter College Sportsplex. The Hawks extended their record to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in CUNYAC play with their second consecutive conference victory, while the Cougars fall to 1-7 (1-1 CUNYAC).
Hunter's offense was spearheaded by Alexa Charles, who posted a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Charles was efficient from the field, hitting nine of her 14 shot attempts and sinking five of eight free throws. Kimberly Lau also made significant contributions, tallying 11 points and six rebounds while adding four assists. Lau's consistent free-throw shooting (4-for-4) and a timely three-pointer helped Hunter maintain its edge in critical stretches.
Katie Burke provided additional firepower, contributing 11 points of her own, including three triples, and displaying her usual tenacity on both ends of the floor. Erin Cosio chipped in with nine points, all coming from beyond the arc, and dished out two assists.
The Hawks' defensive intensity was another highlight of the game. They forced Medgar Evers into 31 turnovers, converting them into 29 points.Â
Hunter set the tone early, outscoring Medgar Evers 23-13 in the first quarter. A balanced attack continued to build momentum, with the Hawks holding a 37-21 lead at halftime. The team never looked back, dominating the third quarter with a 23-18 scoring advantage and finishing strong with a 19-14 edge in the final period.
The Hawks showcased their depth, with contributions coming from every player who saw the court. Makkedah Murray delivered nine points off the bench, capitalizing on all seven of her free-throw attempts, while Sophie Stratton and Dorthea Yokum added valuable minutes in the closing moments.
Hunter will look to carry this momentum into their next matchup as they travel to John Jay for another conference match up on Jan. 11. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
