Hunter Cruises Past Medgar Evers for Second Conference Win

NEW YORK, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's soccer team exploded for four first-half goals and never looked back in a 5–1 victory over Medgar Evers on Saturday afternoon at Randall's Island. With the win, the Hawks improved to 5-5-4 overall and 2-1-3 in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play.

The Purple and Gold came out firing from the opening whistle, scoring three times within the first 12 minutes of action to put the match firmly in their control.

Senior Saleel Eldin opened the scoring in the fourth minute, capitalizing on early pressure to give Hunter the lead. Just seven minutes later, Georgios Tsiakas doubled the advantage with a strike assisted by Fernando Zuvela. The Hawks pushed further ahead in the 12th minute when Abdullah Al Maghrabi found the back of the net off a combination play set up by Leonardo Kaplan and Eldin, making it 3–0.

In the 29th minute, Ahmed Abukar added a fourth goal for the Hawks with Kaplan collecting his second assist of the match. Hunter entered the break with a 4–0 cushion after holding Medgar Evers to just one shot in the first half.

The Hawks made full use of their depth throughout the second half, with 15 players seeing at least 20 minutes of action. Rookie Brandon Fridburg capped off the scoring for Hunter with an unassisted goal in the 53rd minute.

Despite conceding a penalty kick late in the 85th minute, Hunter's defense remained strong throughout, limiting Medgar Evers to two total shots and no corner kicks until the final minutes.

The Hawks recorded 17 shots, including nine on target, with Eldin leading the team with three on goal.

Hunter returns to the pitch on Oct. 22 for the team's annual Senior Day, where they will close out regular season play against Baruch at 3 p.m. on Randall's Island Field #83.
