NEW YORK – Hunter College men's volleyball opened conference play with a commanding 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-22) sweep over CCNY on Wednesday night at Nat Holman Gymnasium.
The Hawks (5-6, 1-0 CUNYAC) showcased a balanced offensive attack, with Lucas George leading the way with five kills on a .333 hitting percentage. Kyle Foley and Jon Pflueger added five and four kills, respectively, while setter Wesley Stubbs orchestrated the offense with a match-high 14 assists.
Hunter took control early in the first set, capitalizing on CCNY's errors while spreading the attack across multiple hitters. George and Mohamed Ahmed combined for key early kills, propelling the Hawks to a 13-7 lead. Hunter maintained its efficiency, closing the set at .258 hitting with a 25-17 victory.
The Hawks carried that momentum into the second set, again limiting mistakes while increasing their defensive presence. Lenny Arbitman was active at the net with three service aces, and Stubbs anchored the back row with six digs. Despite a brief CCNY push, Hunter closed strong behind consecutive points from Charlie Alvarez and Ahmed to take the set 25-15.
The final frame saw the Beavers put up their toughest fight, taking an early lead before Hunter regained control midway through. Pflueger provided a crucial spark off the bench, hitting .800 with four kills in just one set of action. The Hawks closed out the sweep with a 25-22 win, sealing their first conference victory of the season.
The Purple and Gold returns to the court on March 1, where the team continues CUNYAC competition at the John Jay Tri-match. The Hawks will start the day at 1:00 p.m. against Brooklyn College, followed by the hosting Bloodhounds at 3:00 p.m.
