Hunter College Women's Fencing Places 10th at NIWFA Championships; Tobin Secures Top-8 Finish

MADISON, N.J. — The Hunter College women's fencing team put forth a strong effort at the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Championships on Saturday, finishing 10th out of 15 competing schools. The NIWFA, founded in 1929, is the oldest women's sports conference in the United States, and Hunter holds a special connection to its history, as one of the program's former coaches was a founding member of the organization.

The foil squad led the way for Hunter, placing ninth overall, followed by the epee squad in 10th and the sabre squad in 11th. The Hawks saw strong performances across all weapons, with two fencers advancing to the individual rounds.

Katherine Hanin and Brean Tobin both qualified for the individual elimination rounds, representing Hunter in foil. Tobin delivered one of the most exciting moments of the day, winning a thrilling 15-14 bout to advance to the top eight. She ultimately finished seventh in foil, securing a medal and becoming the first Hunter fencer to place in the top eight at the NIWFA Championships since 2015. Her strong performance was a highlight for the Hawks, demonstrating both skill and composure under pressure.

Hanin also fenced well throughout the day, earning a 16th-place finish in foil. Her ability to make it to the individual rounds showcased Hunter's depth and competitiveness in the weapon.

The Hawks' team and squad finishes reflect the continued progress of the program, with multiple athletes putting in strong performances on the conference stage. With Tobin's milestone result and the team's overall showing,

The Purple and Gold continues its season on March 9 at the NCAA Championships.
