BOX SCORE 2 NEW YORK, N.Y. — The Hunter College softball team (4-6) made a statement in its home opener on Thursday, sweeping Yeshiva University (0-8) with back-to-back decisive victories. The Hawks showcased their offensive firepower in a 20-1 win in Game 1 before capping off the doubleheader with a 14-0 shutout in Game 2 at Randall's Island.
Game 1: Hunter 20, Yeshiva 1 (5 Innings)
Hunter College jumped ahead with two runs in the first inning before breaking the game wide open with a seven-run second. The Hawks kept the pressure on with an 11-run fourth inning, putting the game well out of reach. Their offense clicked on all cylinders, racking up 17 hits while capitalizing on key scoring opportunities.
Paige Witalec led the charge with a 3-for-5 performance, driving in two runs and stealing a base. Sonia Rosales Rosenthal also contributed three hits, including a sacrifice fly, while Grace Basil added two hits, an RBI, and a walk. Adriana Ramirez made an impact with two hits, two RBIs, and a stolen base, while Johany Galva drove in two runs as part of a multi-hit game.
In the circle, Grace Basil picked up the win, striking out six batters over three innings while allowing just one run on three hits. Nicole Bowe pitched the final two frames, holding Yeshiva scoreless with three strikeouts.
Game 2: Hunter 14, Yeshiva 0 (5 Innings)
The Hawks carried their momentum into the second game, exploding for 14 runs in the first inning to take full control. Elizabeth Thompson delivered a standout performance, going 2-for-2 with five RBIs, including a grand slam that sent the Hunter dugout into celebration. Adriana Ramirez added two RBIs and a double, while Brianna Flores, Greisy Puelo, and Grace Basil each drove in runs to keep the offense rolling.
Brielle Staskavage was in complete command in the circle, firing a five-inning no-hitter with seven strikeouts, while limiting Yeshiva to just three baserunners. The Hawks' defense remained sharp behind her, keeping Yeshiva off the scoreboard to lock in the shutout victory.
