Hunter Sweeps York to Stay Perfect in CUNYAC Play

JAMAICA, N.Y. – Hunter College kept its winning streak alive in CUNYAC play Tuesday night, sweeping York College 3-0 (27-25, 25-11, 25-18) at York College Gymnasium.

The Hawks (8-6, 3-0 CUNYAC) were led by a dominant offensive performance from Jon Pflueger, who posted nine kills on a blistering .692 hitting percentage while adding five service aces and three block assists. Ahmed Mohamed matched his teammate with nine kills, hitting .615 and contributing six aces to fuel Hunter's strong serving effort.

Hunter had to battle in the opening set, which featured 19 ties and eight lead changes. The Hawks found themselves in a tight contest early but capitalized on key serves from Mohamed and Kyle Foley down the stretch. Foley finished the night with seven kills at a .462 clip and four aces of his own, proving crucial in closing out the first frame, 27-25.

The second set was all Hunter as the Hawks flexed their offensive efficiency. Wesley Stubbs orchestrated the attack with 27 assists, setting up a near-flawless 10 kills on 13 attempts (.769) for the Hawks in the frame. York had no answer for the relentless pace, and Hunter cruised to a commanding 25-11 win.

Hunter sealed the match in the third, overcoming an early push from the Cardinals. Pflueger and Mohamed continued to apply pressure, while Wyatt Kotuk provided steady support at the net, recording five kills on seven swings (.571) along with four block assists. The Hawks pulled away late, securing the final set 25-18 to complete the sweep.

Defensively, Hunter was anchored by strong net play, with 12 total block assists and steady back-row contributions from Foley and Crisostomo Ibarra. The team combined for 13 digs and kept York out of system for much of the match.

The Hawks open up home league play on Thursday as they host Lehman College in the Sportsplex at 6:00 p.m.
