JAMAICA, N.Y. — The Hunter College softball team (13-23, 7-3 CUNYAC) delivered one of its strongest performances of the season on Friday, sweeping York College (3-20, 0-8 CUNYAC) in a pair of five-inning wins, 14–0 and 26–1, at Padavan-Preller Fields. The wins keep the Hawks firmly in postseason contention as they prepare for their final CUNYAC doubleheader of the regular season next weekend.
Game 1: Hunter 14, York (NY) 0 (5 innings)
The Purple and Gold wasted no time setting the tone, scoring seven runs in the first inning and collecting 20 hits in a well-rounded Game 1 win. Jessica Fowler opened the scoring with a walk and later launched a two-run home run in the third, while Paige Witalec added three hits, two RBIs, and a stolen base. Sonia Rosales Rosenthal doubled, tripled, and drove in a run to help fuel the early burst.
Grace Basil kept York off balance throughout, throwing a five-inning no-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks to earn her seventh win. Isabella Thumhart and Adriana Ramirez tallied three hits apiece, with Ramirez knocking in two runs. Olivia Palumbo added two hits and a pair of stolen bases, and Greisy Puelo contributed an RBI single in a strong team effort that saw eight different Hawks record hits.
Basil retired the side in order in the fifth to complete the shutout.
Game 2: Hunter 26, York (NY) 1 (5 innings)
The second game featured another relentless offensive display, as Hunter pushed across runs in all five innings and finished with a season-high 26 on 24 hits. The Hawks batted around three times and capitalized on six York errors, turning every opportunity into momentum.
Fowler stayed red-hot with a 4-for-6 effort, including three RBIs and four runs scored. Palumbo added four more hits, including a solo home run, three runs scored, two RBIs, and two stolen bases. Witalec and Nicole Bowe combined for eight hits, six RBIs, and eight runs, while Thumhart earned her fifth win of the year in the circle and added two RBIs at the plate. Rosales Rosenthal, Elizabeth Thompson, and Janice Hernandez each chipped in multi-RBI performances as the Hawks closed the sweep on a high note.
The Purple and Gold finished the afternoon with their most prolific offensive outing of the season.
