OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — The Hunter College softball team (7-17) traveled to SUNY Old Westbury for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday evening. The Hawks were held scoreless in the opener and couldn't recover from a six-run fifth inning in Game 2, dropping both contests by scores of 8-0 and 10-4.
Game 1: Hunter 0, Old Westbury 8
Hunter collected five hits in the opener but couldn't capitalize on its best scoring chance. Nicole Bowe went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Sonia Rosales Rosenthal, Janice Hernandez, and Jessica Fowler each added one hit. The Hawks loaded the bases in the third inning, but a flyout to left field ended the threat.
Grace Basil pitched a complete game, giving up eight earned runs on 11 hits while recording two strikeouts. Basil held Old Westbury scoreless in the first and third innings, but a five-run fourth proved decisive.
The Hawks played error-free defense but could not convert on their limited scoring chances.
Game 2: Hunter 4, Old Westbury 10
Hunter responded with a 10-hit performance in Game 2, including a three-run rally in the top of the fifth to tie the game. Adriana Ramirez sparked the surge with a two-run double, and Basil followed with an RBI single. Rosales Rosenthal collected two more hits in the nightcap, while Paige Witalec scored a run and Elizabeth Thompson added both an RBI and a run. Johany Galva also chipped in with two hits and a stolen base.
Freshman Isabella Thumhart pitched six innings, allowing seven earned runs while striking out seven. The Hawks stayed within reach until the bottom of the fifth, when four defensive errors contributed to six Old Westbury runs that put the game out of reach.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday, April 9, when they travel to Bronxville for a doubleheader against Sarah Lawrence College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
