BOX SCORE 2 BRONXVILLE, N.Y. — The Hunter College softball team (9-17) exploded for 48 runs across a doubleheader sweep of Sarah Lawrence College on Wednesday afternoon at Mary Levine Field. The Hawks opened the day with a 25-4 win — their highest-scoring game of the season — before rolling to a 23-0 victory in Game 2.
Game 1: Hunter 25, Sarah Lawrence 4
In the opener, the Hawks overwhelmed Sarah Lawrence with a 25-4 victory, piling up 23 hits and scoring in each of the first four innings. The offensive onslaught was fueled by multi-homer games from Sonia Rosales Rosenthal and Adriana Ramirez, who combined for four long balls and nine RBIs.
The Purple and Gold jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the first inning behind six hits, including a lead off home run from Olivia Palumbo and a two-run shot by Ramirez. Elizabeth Thompson added an RBI single, Johany Galva delivered another run-scoring hit, and Palumbo capped the frame with a two-run single up the middle.
Hunter tacked on three more in the second, capitalizing on a defensive miscue before Janice Hernandez and Thompson each brought in runs with a single and a sacrifice fly, respectively. The third inning saw the Hawks blow the game open with 10 more runs, fueled by a two-run blast from Rosenthal, a grand slam off the bat of Paige Witalec, and Ramirez's second home run of the day.
Rosenthal struck again in the fourth with a three-run homer to left, finishing the game 3-for-5 with five RBIs. Witalec also drove in five runs, while Palumbo matched them with four RBIs of her own. Ramirez went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, and Thompson, Galva, Jessica Fowler, and Hernandez all posted multi-hit games.
Isabella Thumhart earned the win in the circle, allowing just one hit and two earned runs over three innings with three strikeouts, while Fowler pitched the final inning in relief, allowing one earned run and recording a strikeout.
Game 2: Hunter 23, Sarah Lawrence 0 (5 innings)
The Hawks capped the sweep with a 23-0 win in five innings, jumping out to a 13-run lead in the first and maintaining control throughout. The offense racked up 16 hits and drew 13 walks, while Grace Basil tossed four shutout innings and struck out 10 to earn the win.
Hunter sent 17 batters to the plate in the top of the first, scoring 13 runs on six hits and three errors. Hernandez delivered a two-run single to center, followed by a two-run double from Thompson. Rosenthal later added an RBI single before Basil drove in two with a hit to right center. Thompson capped the inning with her second two-run double of the frame to push the lead to 13-0.
Rosenthal homered in the second to bring in two more runs, and Basil followed with her second RBI single to extend the lead to 16-0. In the third, Galva drove in two with a single, and Rosenthal added a sacrifice fly to make it 20-0.
Hunter plated three more in the fourth behind an RBI single from Brianna Flores, a bases-loaded walk drawn by Amanda Rivera, and a base hit from Galva to round out a 3-for-3, three-RBI performance. Thompson finished 2-for-2 with four RBIs, while Rosenthal drove in four and Basil went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a stolen base. Hernandez also went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a walk, helping the Hawks close the day with a combined 48 runs and 39 hits across the doubleheader.
Hunter returns to action on Saturday, April 12, for a conference doubleheader at John Jay College. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
