UNION, N.J. — The Hunter College women's volleyball team kicked off the Kean University Tournament on Friday evening with a pair of tough matchups, falling in five sets to Drew University before dropping a four-set contest to host Kean. With the results, the Hawks moved to 3-9 on the season.
Match 1: Drew 3, Hunter 2
(25-16, 18-25, 17-25, 25-17, 15-12)
In the opening match of the tournament, Hunter took a two-sets-to-one lead before falling in a five-set heartbreaker to Drew (2-7).
Amina Moummad delivered a monster performance, racking up 13 kills and a career-best 10 service aces—the highest total for a Hawk this season—while adding 15 digs in an all-around effort.
Lily Mattison also tallied 13 kills and four block assists to lead the offense, finishing with 17 points.
Michelle Liu added seven kills and one ace, hitting .185 for the match, while
Ana Duran contributed four kills on .308 hitting with two block assists. Setter
Madeline Snyder dished out 30 assists and added 16 digs, while
Natalie Polanco led the team defensively with 14 digs in the back row.
Hunter totaled 14 aces and 10 block assists as a team, hitting .170 across the five-set battle. The Hawks held Drew to under .200 in three of the five sets, but were edged in the final frame, 15-12
Match 2: Kean 3, Hunter 1
(25-17, 25-17, 19-25, 25-6)
In the nightcap, Hunter earned a third-set victory but couldn't maintain the momentum against tournament hosts Kean (9-1), falling in four sets.
Mattison paced the Hawks with seven kills and two block assists, while Snyder registered 15 assists, three service aces, and four digs. Duran was effective at the net, posting four block assists and two kills, while Liu and Moummad added five and four kills, respectively.
Natalie Morrill and
Deanna Vinitski each chipped in defensively, combining for four digs and three service aces. As a team, the Hawks were held to a .013 hitting percentage and managed 20 kills, with eight total aces and 10 block assists on the defensive end.
Despite taking the third set 25-19, the Hawks couldn't overcome Kean's efficient offense in the fourth, where the hosts hit .688 in the frame to close out the match
Hunter wraps up tournament play on Saturday as they look to rebound on Day 2 of action.
