BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Hunter College women's basketball team delivered a dominant all-around performance on the road Wednesday evening, cruising past Medgar Evers, 93-50.
The Hawks (13-5, 6-1 CUNYAC) jumped out to a 31-point first quarter and never trailed, extending the lead to 54-19 at halftime and as many as 53 points ahead of Medgar Evers (2-15, 1-6 CUNYAC) the third quarter. The victory marked the team's third straight and ninth in the last 11 games.
Alexa Charles led the way with 34 points, six rebounds and seven steals on 15-of-23 shooting in just 23 minutes. It was her 14th 30-point performance of the season, as the national scoring leader continued her torrid pace.
Hunter received balanced contributions across the board, with 11 players recording points and 28 total coming from the bench. Kennedy DeRuy tallied 12 points, four assists and two steals, while Wanhua Peng added 12 points and six rebounds. Mia Fuller chipped in 11 points and five assists, and Makkedah Murray and Ali Drake each knocked down a pair of threes during a dominant third quarter stretch.
Gianna Henriques pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds to go with four assists and two blocks, anchoring a defense that forced 27 turnovers and held the Cougars to 28.3 percent shooting. Hunter outscored Medgar Evers 54-22 in the paint and 28-7 on fast breaks, while converting 34 points off turnovers.
The Hawks return home Friday to host CCNY in another City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) matchup. Tip-off is set for 5 pm in the Sportsplex.
