NEW YORK, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's basketball team led at the break but couldn't hold on Friday night, falling to John Jay, 78-64, at the Hunter College Sportsplex.
Hunter (4-16, 2-7 CUNYAC) carried a 30-25 advantage into halftime after an efficient opening period, but the Hawks were outscored 53-34 over the final 20 minutes as the visitors pulled away.
Demetrios Kontos paced Hunter with 15 points, hitting three 3-pointers on 6-for-9 shooting. Jayden Jarrett finished with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while John Paul Maaba added eight points and a team-best six assists.
Georgios Gatsias provided nine points off the bench, and Kristian Nunez contributed seven points, eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
Hunter shot 44.1% from the field (26-for-59) and matched John Jay on the offensive glass with 10 rebounds, but struggled at the free-throw line, going 6-for-13. After knocking down five 3-pointers in the first half, the Hawks managed just one from deep after intermission (1-for-8).
Hunter looks to get back in the win collum on Feb. 3 as the team heads to York College for a 7 p.m. tip.
