NEW YORK, N.Y.- The Hunter College women's basketball team cruised to a 79-55 home win over Lehman College on Tuesday night at the Hunter College Sportsplex, led by a dominant 36-point double-double from Alexa Charles.
Hunter (17-6, 10-2 CUNYAC) shook off a one-point first-quarter deficit by clamping down defensively in the second period, holding Lehman (13-11, 8-4 CUNYAC) to nine points while taking a 36-23 halftime lead.
The Hawks continued to surge coming out of the locker room. Hunter shot a 64.3% from the floor in the third quarter and outscored Lehman 24-12 to extend the lead to 60-35 entering the final period. The defensive intensity remained high, as Hunter contested shots at the rim and cleaned up the glass to prevent second-chance opportunities.
Charles was sensational from start to finish. The senior guard scored 36 points on 15-of-23 shooting, adding 10 rebounds to secure the double-double. She attacked in transition, grabbing four steals helping ignite Hunter's fast-break, while adding a pair of blocks.
Gianna Henriques controlled the interior with 14 points on an efficient 6-of-8 shooting performance while pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds, posting her eighth double-double of the season, anchoring the Hawks' front court.
Mia Fullerd dished out 10 assists to lead all players, while adding four rebounds and five points. Makkedah Murray chipped in seven points, and Sophie Stratton added seven off the bench, including two key three-pointers that helped maintain separation.
Wanhua Peng contributed six rebounds, helping Hunter dominate the boards by a 50-44 margin, while posting a season-best three blocks on the night.
Hunter finished the contest shooting 46.9% from the field and capitalized on defensive pressure, converting turnovers into 26 points, while also tallying 22 fast-break points.
Hunter returns to the court on Friday, Feb. 13 for the team's annual Senior Night ahead of a 5 p.m. tip-off against Medgar Evers at the Sportsplex.
