NEW YORK, N.Y.- In a game that came down to the final possession, the Hunter College men's basketball team edged Medgar Evers, 67-66, on Friday night at the Hunter College Sportsplex, sealing the victory in the closing seconds of a tense matchup on the team's annual Senior Night.
Prior to the tip-off the Hawks honored its graduating seniors in
Jayden Jarrett and
Aidan Glackin.
Jarrett made sure the night had plenty of memorable moments. The senior posted a dominant line of 25 points and 22 rebounds, going 12-for-23 from the floor as Hunter (6-18, 4-9 CUNYAC) leaned on its inside game for most of the night. Glackin added 10 points with a 3-pointer and helped set the tone defensively and on the glass in the first half.
Hunter carried a slim 29-28 lead into halftime, despite a cold start from the perimeter (0-for-7 from 3 in the first half). The Hawks stayed in front by attacking the paint, where Jarrett consistently created second chances, and by getting to the free-throw line enough to keep momentum on their side.
The second half turned into a possession-by-possession finish. Medgar Evers (1-23, 1-12 CUNYAC) briefly nudged ahead late, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 4:11 remaining that put the Cougars up 62-61. Hunter answered with key baskets in the lane to regain control, but the margin stayed razor-thin down the stretch.
In the closing minute, Hunter had an opening at the line and capitalized just enough.
Jeremiah Otasowie stepped to the stripe with 48 seconds left and tied the game at 66 with the first free throw. After Medgar Evers came up empty on the other end, the Hawks got another chance late, and Otasowie returned to the line with 5 seconds remaining. He missed the first attempt, then knocked down the second for the 67-66 lead.
Medgar Evers had one last look after a timeout, but its final 3-point attempt at the buzzer missed, and Hunter secured the Senior Night victory.
Along with Jarrett's 25-point, 22-rebound performance, Hunter got 13 points from John Paul Maaba, who also dished 10 assists for a double-double. Otasowie finished with 10 points, while Glackin added his 10 points to go with steady work on both ends as the Hawks closed out the one-point win.
Hunter returns to action on Feb. 17 at Brooklyn College for the final game of the regular season at 7 p.m.
