Hawks Take Home Two Wins at King's College Tri-Match

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Hunter College men's volleyball team enjoyed a strong showing Saturday afternoon, sweeping a tri-match at King's College to improve to 5-2 on the season. The Hawks opened the day with a four-set win over the host Monarchs before closing the event with a straight-set victory over St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) inside Scandlon Gym.

Game 1: Hunter 3, King's (PA) 1 
(25-20, 25-22, 21-25, 28-26)

Hunter earned a hard-fought four-set victory in its opening match of the day, holding off a late push to secure the win in extra points.

The Hawks set the tone early by taking the first two sets behind steady offensive pressure and strong net play. After King's extended the match with a third-set win, Hunter responded in a tightly contested fourth, closing out the match with a 28-26 decision.

Ahmed Mohamed led the Hawks with a match-high 25 kills on .333 hitting, adding five service aces and three solo blocks to finish with 33 points overall. Sebastian Gomez contributed 11 kills, while Demetri Gournelos and Jon Domingo each added key points in extended rallies.

Wesley Stubbs guided the offense with 27 assists and added three total blocks, while Hunter totaled eight solo blocks and six block assists as a team. Bradley Campos anchored the back row with a team-high 14 digs, and the Hawks finished with 50 assists and eight service aces in the win.

Game 2: Hunter 3, St. Joseph's Brooklyn 0 
(25-19, 25-17, 25-23)

Hunter capped the tri-match with a dominant straight-set victory, controlling the tempo throughout to earn its second win of the day.

The Hawks were efficient offensively from the opening serve, hitting .536 in the first set and never relinquishing momentum. Hunter continued its balanced attack in the second set before closing out the sweep with a composed 25-23 win in the third.

Mohamed once again paced the Hawks, posting 11 kills on .526 hitting in just two sets of action. Gournelos led the team with nine kills, while Wesley Stubbs added five kills on .625 hitting and dished out 22 assists.

K-Ci Akwandoh and Alex Fulgencio anchored the net defense as Hunter recorded 16 block assists, while Brandon Yeh totaled 12 assists and helped direct the offense from the service line.

With the pair of victories, Hunter completed a perfect day ahead of the team's conference opener at Medgar Evers on Feb. 10 at 6 p.m.
